New Three-Part TransferBOOST Series Released by IHEP & HCM

Just in time for National Community College Month this April, HCM and The Institute for Higher Education (IHEP) is releasing a three-part series of insights to help colleges and state leaders boost transfer student enrollment, retention and completion.

The insights are informed by TransferBOOST (Bachelor’s Opportunity Options that are Straightforward and Transparent), an IHEP-led initiative to create equitable and affordable pathways for transfer students. Colleges in Arizona, Illinois and Virginia joined TransferBOOST to examine transfer policies and practices to ensure they meet the needs of today’s students.

Five Key Lessons from TransferBOOST:

  1. Ensuring equitable student transfer outcomes requires consistency and intentionality.

  2. Serving transfer students well is an essential enrollment (and revenue) strategy.

  3. Institutions can make transfer pathways affordable and improve their financial stability.

  4. Schools should communicate jointly about transfer pathways and emphasize benefits.

  5. Strong state and institutional partnerships are critical to creating stronger transfer pathways.

Clear supports and equitable and affordable pathways to complete a degree across multiple institutions have never been more urgent.

Affordability matters a great deal for transfer students. Multiple studies have found that the cost of higher education and affordability are top concerns for transfer students, a finding that holds regardless of race, gender, or racial/ethnic background.

Lessons learned from the TransferBOOST initiative, launched across 24 institutions across three states: Arizona, Illinois and Virginia.
