HCM Strategists Releases First-Ever Analysis of State Investments in Short-term Credentials

HCM’s latest publication, A Typology and Policy Landscape Analysis of State Investments in Short-term Credentials Pathways, offers the first-ever cataloging and analysis of state investments in short-term credentials, with our research identifying 59 direct, sustained programs in 28 different states —totaling $3.81Billion in funding.

As noted in coverage of the report by Work Shift, most have launched in the last five years, underscoring the evolving landscape of higher ed. From the article:

“Perhaps the biggest driver of increased state funding for short-term credentials is economic in nature,” says Stephanie Murphy, director of postsecondary state policy and research for HCM. “It’s no secret that there is a significant disparity between the skills demanded by employers and the skills possessed by the workforce. This skills gap affects a region’s ability to attract and retain major employers.”
