SPOTLIGHT | Encouraging State Leadership in Expanding High-Quality Instruction

Client: CurriculumHQ| Project: Collaborative for Student Success | Partnership length: 2021 - Present | HCM Service Area Spotlight: Strategic Advice and Counsel | Portfolio Category: K-12

HCM Strategists has held a strategic partnership with the Collaborative for Student Success since the Collaborative’s founding in 2014. In 2021, HCM supported the launch of the CurriculumHQ platform to advocate for and track publicly available state data on high-quality instructional materials, curriculum adoption guidance, and professional development and learning.

OVERVIEW

The Collaborative for Student Success advocates for high standards; high-quality instructional materials, professional learning and assessments; and strong systems of accountability to ensure that all students are prepared for postsecondary success. As established partners to the Collaborative, we support the organization with CurriculumHQ, a project that advocates for high-quality instructional materials in classrooms by providing accessible information on what guidance and supports states provide to districts, schools and educators.

We conduct research on emerging knowledge of local, state and national policies surrounding curriculum selection and implementation; develop and maintain partnerships with in-state and national organizations; cultivate news and resources; and author a blog of expert commentary on how high-quality curriculum can drive student progress and equip educators with the resources they deserve to drive classroom learning.

OUR WORK + IMPACT

We support the research behind an interactive map of the United States with publicly available information from the state education agency about instructional materials, curriculum adoption guidance, and professional development and learning. We track whether and how states plan to use their American Rescue Plan (ARP) Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) pandemic recovery dollars to promote quality materials. We also research and identify key resources for school board members and district leaders on how to implement quality curriculum through a general resources page and subject-specific pages.

In addition, we stay abreast of advancements in quality curriculum knowledge, highlight strong state and advocacy efforts and call states that have fallen behind to action through the Curriculum A-B-C Blog, authored by HCM’s senior affiliate Jocelyn Pickford. Through this platform, we generate conversation about quality materials on social media and spread awareness of the Collaborative’s work.
